Override Prez veto of Navajo Housing Authority

COUNCIL IS NOW ON LEGISLATION 0340-13. WHICH IS OVERRIDING PRESIDENTIAL VETO OF COUNCIL’S LEGISLATION TO CREATE A HOUSING ENTITY TO REPLACE NAVAJO HOUSING AUTHORITY.

DELEGATE LEONARD TSOSIE
Compromise was that Naabik’iyati Committee assume role and to also clear up issues regarding Navajo Housing Authority oath when NHA board members take office. This legislation that was vetoed by Prez Shelly tries to do that. I tried to meet with Shelly but it never happened to reach a compromise. As you recall Prez sent letter about his concern regarding presidential inaction to appoint NHA board members but there is no actual appointment power. And so he vetoed Council legislation to create another federal Tribally Designated Entity which would remove NHA as TDE.

We all know letter from US Housing and Urban Development for NHA to return $100 million. This money cud have been used for housing for Navajo people. With this Over-Ride, we can go in a different direction from NHA and NHA board, which is using federal housing money to hire lobbyist and consultants to remain as board members.

VOTE AT 11 AM WAS 10 IN FAVOR, 10 OPPOSED SO LEGISLATION FAILS BECAUSE OVERRIDE NEEDED 16 “YES” VOTES.
