Proposed Navajo Nation Uranium Commission legislation

Greetings Relatives/Frens,
Here’s some MUST READ info about the Navajo Nation Uranium Task Force’s work on proposed legislation to create a Navajo Uranium Commission.

Navajo grassroots activist/community organizer Ed Becenti is responsible for getting the following information from Uranium Task Force so Thank You, Ed or is it “Mr. Picante?!” Inside joke: During last week’s U.S. EPA hearings on two proposed option for Navajo Generating Station to reduce its pollution, Ed signed up to comment during the hearing held at Page, Ariz. The EPA monitor called out, “Would Mr. Ed Picante please come forward.” The EPA monitor mispronounced Ed’s name and so we’ve been relentlessly teasing him since then.

Ya’at’eeh’ Mr. Becenti,
In answer to your question, please forward the e-mail and attachments to anyone without hesitation. We look forward to a wide range of participation in this process.
Thank you again for your interest and support.

THE FOLLOWING IS A 11-19-13 EMAIL FROM NDOJ ATTORNEY DAVID A. TAYLOR:
First of all I want to thank all of you for your participation in and contributions to the Navajo Uranium Task Force.

Several of you have asked for a Word version of the Draft Uranium Commission legislation we discussed during the last Uranium Task Force meeting. Attached you will find a Word version of the Draft Legislation. Please realize that this document does not include any of the comments and suggested changes that were made during the recent meeting. As we work our way through this process I will attempt and distribute updated versions. The attached document is meant to be a starting place. But, it is important for you to realize that we want to complete this process as soon as possible. There is no formal comment period regarding this document. Please do not hesitate to submit your thoughts and comments and proposed changes to this document to the Navajo Department of Justice through me by e-mail.

Additionally, we would like to make this e-mail distribution group as open and as representative of all interested parties and groups as possible . Do not hesitate to suggest additional individuals who should be included in this e-mail list.

Next, I am attaching several other documents that may be of interest to you in considering the problem of how to prioritize abandoned uranium mine sites for clean-up purposes. These documents include several provided to the Navajo Department of Justice by U.S. EPA Region 9 and one developed by the Navajo Department of Justice. These should also be considered as working documents in the process of being developed and revised by various government agencies including U.S. EPA, Navajo EPA and Navajo DOJ.

These documents were generated in connection with the development of the next Federal Government Five-Year Plan to address uranium contamination in Navajo Indian Country. The latest information available to me suggests that a Draft Five Year Plan will be distributed by U.S. EPA in January or February of 2014 and we will all have a chance to formally comment on it at that time. In the meantime, the attached documents will give you some idea of how the agencies are contemplating prioritizing sites for cleanups and what a priority list might look like.

Finally, I plan to provide you with two additional documents tomorrow. These include a copy of the sign-up sheet for the last Uranium Task Force Meeting and a copy of the Resolution adopted by the Uranium Task Force.

Don’t hesitate to let me know should you have any questions or comments.
