BLOGGING FROM SHIRPOCK, NM, CHAPTER WHERE DINE’ C.A.R.E. IS PRESENTING RESOLUTION THAT ASKS THE SHIPROCK COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT THEIR OPPOSITION TO THE PURCHASE OF THE BHP COAL MINE BY THE NAVAJO COUNCIL:
SHIPROCK CHAPTER PREZ DUANE “Chinli” Yazzie
As chapter president here, I’m very careful about how I present myself on issues like this cuz good pple here, good pple here, relatives on both sides, good points on both sides.
“It’s very difficult to bepresiding office and make any indication of what is best for community.
Preference is go to the vote after presentations. If we start talking about it, we’ll be here until 4 pm. The way that I think we need to vote is we all know that there other chapter members here. And it’s difficult to really take an official vote of actual members. And during one chapter vote, one of the chapter officials had the actual chapter membership go to one area of the meeting room and that way we all know that the vote was made by chapter members.
Yazzie is asking those in support of Dine CARE to go to one side of the room and those that are opposing to go to the other side of the room. Those abstaining can remain seated with non-Shiprock Chapter members.
DINE C.A.R.E. MEMBER ADELLA YAZZIE, director lORI gOODMAN, sarah white, and another lady presented Supporting reasons.
BHP Norman Benally presented opposition.
Fannie Atcitty, a community member & former Dine’ College Board president:
Tabled because language contradictory. Syas oppose and asks Council reject BHP offer but then asks Council “to consider.
TABLING VOTE: 34 IN FAVOR, 19 OPPOSED, 6 ABSTAINING
SHIPROCK CHAPTER PRESIDENT DUANE “CHILI” YAZZIE
Dine CARE should use this time to revise their resolution and bring it back to the Shirpock Chapter for consideration. Their resolution is still alive and can be brought back before the chapter when Dine CARE lets us know.
